The Perfect Storm

You may have seen a recent story (here) of an Amazon delivery person spitting on a package and then using his hand to smear his saliva on the package. While this may be an exceptional occurrence, it starkly illustrates the clear and present danger facing America from our selfish, uncaring and lazy choices.

No one should be surprised to see this kind of behavior from an Amazon employee. The evidence documenting the horrible way in which Amazon treats their employees is abundant. Most just choose to ignore it for the alleged “convenience” Amazon provides. It’s payback time.

We’re number one! Again, no one should be surprised. America has the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the world. Why is this?

America has the perfect distribution system for COVID-19, Amazon. A concentrated, centralized infection point with a far reaching and “to your door” delivery structure. If you’re a virus, Amazon is your dream. In case you missed it (here), Amazon workers have tested positive for COVID-19 at 10 U.S. warehouses. Considering the working conditions at Amazon, expect practically every Amazon warehouse and delivery person in America to be infected.

Now we have to have an uncomfortable conversation. Amazon is not the only reason America has the highest COVID-19 cases, but Amazon has contributed to the lazy and horribly out-of-shape American lifestyle.

According to the CDC, the prevalence of adult obesity increased from 30.5% in 2000 to 42.4% in 2018. It’s not all Amazon of course, but they have made a significant contribution. Clicking a button doesn’t burn near as many calories as walking to the grocery store, like my 91 year old mother did during the great depression.

Now here’s the really scary part. Again, according to the CDC, the prevalence of obesity was 40.0% among America’s young adults aged 20 to 39 years.

When COVID-19 first came to America, they were saying it wasn’t affecting young people, and only those with underlying conditions. This turned out not to be true in America. That’s because there is a huge difference between a typical Chinese or Korean youth and the now nearly typical (40% obese) American youth. Turns out, obesity is a COVID-19 underlying condition.

Please, if you’re overweight, consider yourself as having an COVID-19 underlying condition and take extreme caution. The death toll in America from COVID-19 could very well be staggering.

In the future, if America has one, we may want to reconsider some of the choices we’ve made. Like buying locally from trusted businesses that respect their employees, instead of continuing to rely on the massive corporations that created and fueled this perfect storm.
